Mangrove rehabilitation towards biodiversity in Bac Lieu

In recent years, coastal mangrove area and biodiversity in Bac Lieu province has been significantly effected due to natural resource over-exploitation, land-use conversion to aquaculture and agriculture, severe environmental pollution by reackless discharge of solid and liquid waste, impacts of natural disasters like storms, erosion, sea level rise etc.

To overcome these situations, Bac Lieu People’s Committee issued many decisions regarding the effective coastal forests rehabilitation and development in response to Climate Change such as Decision 578/QĐ-UBND approving the estimate budget for conservation planning and development of Bac Lieu Bird Park’s in special forest and Canh Dien forest in Dong Hai district of Bac Lieu to 2020; Decision 406/QĐ-UBND on working plan of  the project on climate change adaptation through biodiversity enhancement in Bac Lieu province with  ICMP/CCCEP...The decisions shaped provincial comprehensive strategy in rehabilitating mangrove forests by enhancing forest’s biodiversity.

Being a part of ICMP/CCCEP since 2012, subproject on climate change adaptation through biodiversity enhancement in Bac Lieu contributed to improve managrove rehabilitation through planting models of mangrove which well adapted to climate change and good growth in the wetland offering inland protection and biogreen shield, as well as anti-wave fences for seedlings. Residents may have both production behind the belts and at the same time afforestation.

Biodiversity rehabilitation was executed in all special use forest, production forest at crutial and difficult areas where it’s hard for forest tree existence. Therefore, evaluation on natural conditions, characteristics of ecosystem and biodiversity, sources of genetic and ecological rehalibitation planning subarea were taken into account seriously. All activities including forest resource development monitoring, natural resource usage and environmental services had been conducted under the project.

Since 2010, based on the lessons learnt from previous measures, the project experts decided to plant suitable species to specific types of land like R.mucronata on the unused areas of shrimp ponds; Sindora maritima, Xylocarpus Mekong gensis, Lumnitzera, Ceriop tegal, Bruguiera Cylindrica and Rhizophora on degraded, salty and solid areas; Casuarina equisetifolia on high areas; Avicennia and Sonneratia on the sediment areas which are behind the wave breaking fences. These rehabilitation methods are showing good results and proving to be very effective.

From 2010 until 2014, more than 100 ha of mixing mangrove forests had been planted. In 2014, the project planted 6 ha forests at protected areas applying the biodiversity enhancement methods. It has established a mangrove forest belt covering Vinh Thinh, Vinh Hau, Hiep Thanh and Vinh Trach Dong districts of Bac Lieu Province.

The biodiversity rehabilitation firstly focused on plantation, then on the animals and the aquaculture. In the near future, the project will continue to improve the outcomes as well as establish the communication activities to raise community’s environmental awareness.
