Vietnamese Government approves policies on coastal forest management

The Vietnamese Government has approved a policy on the management, protection and sustainable development of coastal forests in response to climate change.   
Launch of a cross-provincial working group for water management in the Long Xuyen Quadrangle

On 17 June 2016, a joint technical working group for water management in the Long Xuyen Quadrangle (LXQ) was launched in Long Xuyen, An Giang, by the provinces of An Giang and Kien Giang, supported by ICMP. The working group was established to ensure that the two provinces work hand in hand on managing water resources in the Long Xuyen Quadrangle irrigation system, which extends across both provinces. There is currently no regular formal exchange between the provinces on water management.   
ICMP and the Netherlands cooperate on coastal protection

ICMP and the Embassy of the Netherlands in Viet Nam are cooperating on coastal protection in the Mekong Delta.   
GIZ Programme Director of ICMP speaks at the 20th anniversary of the Management Board of Forestry Projects

On 20 January 2016, the Management Board of Forestry Projects (MBFP) celebrated its 20th anniversary (1995-2015) and was presented with the Third–Class Labour Medal awarded by the President of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam.   
ICMP featured during high-level maritime conference

Dr. Christian Henckes, GIZ Programme Director of the Integrated Coastal Management Programme (ICMP), presented ICMP’s experiences during the East Asian Seas Congress, which was held from 16-21 November 2015 in Da Nang.   
UNEP supports ICMP activities on coastal management

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is co-financing ICMP’s activities on coastal protection in the Mekong Delta, the GIZ Programme Director of ICMP, Dr. Christian Henckes, announced on 20 September 2015. “With its expertise and political weight, UNEP is an ideal partner for further promoting coastal management in the Mekong Delta”, Mr. Henckes explained.   
Bayer AG and ICMP cooperate to make rice production safer

ICMP and Bayer AG, a global enterprise focusing on agriculture and health care, have started their cooperation on rice production in the Mekong Delta in the framework of the “Better Rice Initiative Asia” (BRIA). The objective of the cooperation is to improve the quality and safety of Vietnamese rice by training farmers to use improved farming techniques.   
VASI and ICMP launch coastal management strategy

The Vietnam Administration of Seas and Islands (VASI) launched the new coastal management strategy with support from ICMP on 8 July 2015 in Soc Trang. VASI, which is part of the Ministry of Natural Resources & Environment (MONRE), is the government entity responsible for integrated coastal zone management in Vietnam, and ICMP is implementing a successful approach on integrated coastal zone management in the Mekong Delta.   
MARD: More Innovation in Erosion Control

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) called on provinces and international actors to deploy more innovative solutions to confront erosion. At the workshop “Erosion Control in the Mekong Delta – Challenges and Solutions”, hosted by MARD on 6 July 2015 in Soc Trang with support from ICMP, Mr. Hoang Van Thang, Vice-Minister of MARD, emphasized that erosion is a serious problem in the Mekong Delta that demands integrated solutions.   
German Vice-Minister visits ICMP

Dr. Friedrich Kitschelt, State Secretary (Vice-Minister) in the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), visited ICMP sites in the Mekong Delta on 29 November 2014. His visit focused on the innovative breakwater fences and the co-management model for mangrove rehabilitation.   
German and Dutch parliamentarians visit ICMP

Two delegations of German and Dutch parliamentarians visited ICMP sites in the Mekong Delta in April 2014 in order to learn about ecosystem challenges in the face of climate change. The German delegation also met with representatives of the South-West Steering Committee in order to discuss the importance of regional coordination in the Mekong Delta.
