VFBC project supports assessment of capacity building needs for special-use and protection forests in Vietnam
GLX Hanoi, 28th July 2023 – Within the framework of the Project on Sustainable Forest Management and Biodiversity Conservation (VFBC) funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Biodiversity Conservation Component implemented by WWF-Vietnam has completed a comprehensive institutional assessment to build management capacity for special-use forests (SUF) and protection forests in the project area.
Information about the Biodiversity Conservation Component
The Biodiversity Conservation Component (BCA)[1] is part of the Project on Sustainable Forest Management and Biodiversity Conservation (VFBC) funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The Management Board for Forestry projects (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) is project owner. The project is implemented from May 2021 to 2026. The BCA component aims to maintain and improve forest quality and at the same time maintain stability of wildlife populations in provinces with high conservation value. The project's objective is to target 14 special-use forests (SUFs) and 07 protection forests, linking forest management boards across the region's landscape to maintain forest coverage and connect habitats for protecting endemic and endangered animal species in Vietnam. The BCA component is implemented by WWF- USA and other partners such as: WWF Vietnam, Helvetas Vietnam, Leibniz Institute of Animal Research, Re:wild (formerly Global Wildlife Conservation, GWC), Education for Nature Vietnam (ENV), International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and Fauna and Flora International (FFI)
The Biodiversity Conservation Component includes 4 sub-components: Sub-compnent1: Promotion of conservation-friendly production and business for forest-dependent communities; Sub-component 2: Strengthening management of special-use forests and protection forests; Sub-component 3: Strengthening effectiveness of the law enforcement system against wildlife and forest crimes; Sub-component 4: Reducing consumption demand through behavioral change methods
