According to the released data at the seminar introducing the progress of implementing the forest carbon pilot project (REDD +) and the integrated monitoring system within the framework of the KfW10 project organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on the afternoon of April 28 in Hanoi, from 2014 to the end of June 2021, the KfW10 project has disbursed over VND 265 billion/VND 292 billion, reaching 91% of the plan.

As stated by Mr. Hoang Phu My, Director of the Central KfW10 Project Management Board, the community forest management (CFM) under the project has established 72 CFM Management Boards in the KfW10 project area, with a total area of natural forest for forest production was over 23,000 ha/20,000 ha, which was temporarily managed by the Commune People's Committee in the past, reaching 118% of the plan.

In addition, the project also cooperated with international wildlife conservation organizations to implement pilot carbon certification for 3 village communities of Dak Lom, Dak Lieu and Vi Chring of Hieu commune, Kon Plong district, Kon Tum province with a total area of 1,238ha.

The project plans to build a trial afforestation model on land contaminated with chemical toxins during the war and a trial model of large timber forestation towards forest certification with an area of 10ha in Kon Tum province.

The seminar received the participation of many international organizations, the Vietnamese forest protection community, experts and managers.

In accordance with Mr. Do Quang Trung, Acting Head of Management Board for Forestry Projects, although it is only a small model with the initial pilot, the results achieved by the KfW10 project are important to provide additional data, serving as a premise for upgrading and promoting the model at the provincial and national level in the future.

As claimed by Mr. Josh Kempinski - Director of the FFI Program in Vietnam: “When piloting REDD + in the three-village community in Hieu commune, we tried to come up with solutions to address the challenges of forest governance, thereby improving community capacity, and the people can learn and experience before deployment”.

The overall goal of the project is to contribute to maintaining the integrity of the forest ecosystem and the biodiversity of the natural forest ecosystem in the South Central Coast and the Western Highlands and at the same time improving the living standards of the local ethnic minority communities.

Mr. A Tuan - representative of the village community forest Management Board in Hieu commune, shared: “Forest protection organizations regularly assign each other to patrol community forests according to the established plan, thus invasion to community forest is very few... I propose that the Management Board of the KfW10 project and donors should soon issue community forest carbon certificates to the 3 villages so that the people will have a stable income to maintain patrol and protection of forests".
