Drastic conservation and development of Kien Giang Biosphere Reserve

GLX Having an area of more than 1.1 million ha, Kien Giang Biosphere Reserve (BR) is the 2nd largest of the eight Vietnam BRs that recognized by UNESCO as the World Biosphere Reserve. Kien Giang BR contains a rich, diverse and unique landscape and ecosystems. This is the fifth Vietnam Biosphere Reserve recognized by UNESCO. Kien Giang BR covers the territory of Phu Quoc, An Minh, Vinh Thuan, Kien Luong and Kien Hai districts. Kien Giang BR has three core areas of the U Minh Thuong National Park, Phu Quoc National Park and Kien Luong - Kien Hai Coastal Protection Forest.

As other provinces of the Mekong Delta, Kien Giang is facing the concerns for climate change impact and the negative effects of climate change that directly affect Biosphere Reserve’s ecosystem of the province. Due to the impact of climate change sea level rise predicted would be about 1m in 2100 causing a large flooded area of Kien Giang (85%). Currently, sea level rise and metabolism from potential alkaline soils to the ones that impacted by climate change are severely affecting land and mangrove integrity including the Kien Giang Biosphere Reserve.

Since its declaration so far as a World Biosphere Reserve, Kien Giang has proposed and implemented various activities to preserve ecosystems and biodiversity for the core area of which the project on "conservation and development of Kien Giang biosphere reserve - Vietnam" is conducted in Integrated Coastal Management Programme (ICMP). In 2014, Decision No.160/QD-UBND issued by Kien Giang province to strengthen PMU of "Conservation and development of the Kien Giang Biosphere Reserve - Vietnam" phase 2 (2012 -2016. Project methodology is to create the interactive activities among locals, Women's Union, Youth Union and state officials and agencies for implementing project goals, supporting sustainable management of resources natural for Kien Giang province,  especially in Biosphere Reserve and mangroves, supporting mechanisms development and implementation for effective management of the Reserve and National Park. In addition, the project also provides technical assistance for the poor people in the province, combines livelihood and poverty reduction programmes...

The activities of the project aim to enhance the Biosphere Reserve management skills for the Management Board and relevant units, water management, and fire protection technique in U Minh Thuong National Park, Phu Quoc and the mangrove forest in Kien Giang province. In the next phase, the project shall continue to coordinate with local and international experts in developing action plans for Kien Giang BR with a vision to 2020, in collaborating with relevant agencies to accelerate the establishment of two reserves " Conservation Area for species and habitat - Phu My " and "Natural Reserve of Kien Giang limestone mountains"  for a good implementation of the Prime Minister ‘s decision on the master plan for biodiversity conservation of the country by 2020, vision to 2030.

Though strong actions, the project on “Conservation and Development of Kien Giang Biosphere Reserve – Vietnam” has helped to preserve and develop many rare species and plants that are endangered by climate change and human impacts. Melaleuca forest ecosystems, bird population biodiversity in U Minh Thuong National Park has been put in investigation and impact monitoring; large areas of  Lumnitzera littorea in Phu Quoc has been restored... these are basis for the national and international organizations to invest in this area. However, there are still negative impacts on the ecosystems, protection and development of the ecosystem diversity in Biosphere Reserve therefore continue requiring drastic involvement of local government as well as the local people.
